Chapter Spotlight: Phi Mu, Alpha Beta

The Houndstooth Press Chapter Spotlight:

Alpha Beta Chapter of Phi Mu at

 The University of Arkansas

As the second oldest sorority in the United States, the first Phi Mu chapter was founded in 1852 at Weslayan College. With 123 collegiate chapters and a 164 year history, the collegiate chapters of Phi Mu are all unique. The University of Arkansas Alpha Beta chapter is no different. The chapter was established on October 23rd, 1923 and recolonized in September of 2012.

This past August of 2016 they participated in formal recruitment along with 11 other panhellenic chapters. They welcomed home pledge class 2016 consisting of 139 new members to their chapter, with the theme of Digging for Gold.

They have been extremely active on the University of Arkansas campus, with their competitive abilities. Some of the awards they have won include 1st place in Homecoming 2012, 1st place in Stoll Competition 2014, and the 2015 Panhellenic Spirit Award.

Phi Mu’s national philanthropy is Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. The Alpha Beta chapter members host their annual Miracle Man Pageant. The pageant consists of members of various fraternities competing in silly categories for the title of “Miracle Man.” It doesn’t just stop there, Phi Mu also puts on other events for Children’s Miracle Network such as Candy Canes for Kids and Jail and Bail on campus. They also are some of the top fundraising contributors to the annual Dance Marathon hosted by Hogs for Hope.

The Alpha Beta’s sisterhood is lively with multiple events this semester. In the fall they hosted Dad’s day during parents weekend where they had an outdoor lunch with their dad’s and families.

In the Spring Semester they hosted a brunch for their Mom’s Day celebrations. The brunch was proceeded by a silent auction and gave an opportunity for the members and their mom’s to spend time together.

Their social presence is as lively as ever. They have hosted multiple functions by themselves, and with other panhellenic organizations. During the fall 2016 semester some of these functions were BonnaMu, Popstars and Groupies, Nightmare on Maple Street, and ended the semester with their very own Semi Formal, Happy Mu Year.

Phi Mu’s motto is “Les Soeurs Fideles” which means “The Faithful Sisters.” Alpha Beta sure is carrying out this one!

We cannot wait to see all the things Alpha Beta will accomplish, and the legacy they will leave!
