This week we heard a story about a little boy named Reid who received a trip to Disney World, a trip that he had wished of taking for a very long time. After some research (and super cute Instagram posts), we found out that Reid was able to take this trip because of a local Chi Omega chapter. So, what better time to spotlight Chi Omega than when one of their chapters literally just gave a child a ticket to a magical kingdom? But first, let’s talk about what philanthropy Chi omega is paired with to make these dreams come true.
After researching opportunities to establish a national philanthropy, Chi Omega announced its alliance with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2002. The Make-A-Wish Foundation arranges ways to grant “wishes” to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Since the start of this alliance, the ladies of Chi Omega have raised an astonishing 17 MILLION dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which makes them one of the foundation’s Cause Champion sponsors.
Now, let me tell you about a few of the many individual chapters who are doing an impeccable job of making kids dreams come true:
Texas Christian University:
The girls at TCU are doing it BIG when it comes to raising money for Make-A-Wish. We’re talking “weekends away at a vacation home” big. Every year the chapter hosts an auction during parent’s weekend where alum and members’ families can donate things to be auctioned off during the weekend. At the silent auction you can get smaller items such as jewelry, dog accessories, tailgating décor and more. The live auction is when the girls pull out the big guns. People have the opportunity to bid on items like Cowboys tickets, suite seats at Rangers games, and even weekend-long trips at vacation homes. Last year the ladies raised $175,000!!!! Yeah that’s right, $175,000 in ONE weekend. The best part about the money raised is that all of it goes directly to the Make-A-Wish North Texas in Fort Worth. This means they get to keep in close communication with their philanthropy and see all the incredible things the money is doing. They also host an event in the spring called “Frats at Bat” where fraternities pay to play in a two-day softball tournament. The fraternities also buy t-shirts to wear to the event, and it usually raises around $5,000. So whether it be helping children meet their favorite celebrity or giving frat boys a chance to relive their glory days out on the field, TCU knows how to make some wishes come true.
University of Arkansas:
The ladies of the Chi Omega Psi chapter at the University of Arkansas always go above and beyond when it comes to making children’s wishes come true. They grant a wish not just every school year but every semester. Reid wasn’t the first and definitely won’t be the last child to go to Disney World at the hands of the psi chapter. As a matter fact, if you go to the Make-A-Wish Mid-South website, you will see the sweetest picture of a little girl named Harper who also got a trip to Disney World. The girls at the U of A also host events throughout the semester that raise money for their philanthropy. For example: Wings for Wishes. Anybody can buy a ticket to this event, and you get to eat as many wings as you please. It’s good to know that although each dollar spent might be contributing to your freshman fifteen, it’s also contributing to what could be one of the happiest moments of a little boy or girl’s childhood.
University of Mississippi:
The Tau chapter of Chi Omega at the University of Mississippi also finds the way to people’s hearts through their tummies. They host an event in the fall called “Chi O Donuts” of which all the proceeds go to Blaire Batson Children’s Hospital, a place that holds very dear to the Ole Miss Chi O’s hearts. Then the girls host “Chi O Crawfish” in the spring to raise money specifically for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The ladies at Ole Miss are also granting a wish on October 30th, and I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but I’ll just say the University of Arkansas Chi Omegas aren’t the only ones sending someone on a magical vacation (wink, wink). All of their yearly events combined raised an estimated $92,000+ over the past year!
These ladies have chosen once, chosen wisely, AND chosen to go the extra mile when it comes to philanthropy. We are so, so proud! First it was Zeta, then it was Chi O, and next week we’ll be spotlighting another awesome sorority. So remember: stay tuned, people!
